Video: Preparing Bach’s masterpiece, Saint Matthew Passion

This week will be one of the high points of the 2015-16 season, as we perform Bach’s legendary Saint Matthew Passion with expert conductor Paul McCreesh and singers from his London-based Gabrieli Consort. The concerts are sure to be breathtaking, and are nearly sold out. (If you don’t see availability now, your best bet is to watch for last-minute availability due to exchanges, or even visit the Ordway ticket office shortly before the concert.)

These concerts will likely be different than some of the Saint Matthew Passion performances you’ve heard in the past. Historical scholarship in the last 25 years supports the conclusion that Bach’s choir parts were not intended for large vocal ensembles, but rather a “choir” of one solo voice on each part to perfectly complement a chamber orchestra. We’ll perform the work in just such a manner, aided by eight virtuosic singers from the Gabrieli Consort. Hear more about this approach in our video preview (above).

Behind the Scenes

We’re also offering a special opportunity for you to really go behind the scenes and understand the artistic development of this major program. Participants are invited to a private discussion and reception tonight, a dress rehearsal on Thursday, and receive the best available seats for Saturday night’s concert. (Details + reservations)

We look forward to experiencing this remarkable work with you this weekend.
