Classical Music Loved by The New York Times and Played by the SPCO

By Paul Finkelstein, Artistic Planning Manager

Jessie Montgomery

It is great to see so many of the SPCO’s favorite artists and collaborators included on this New York Times list of “5 Minutes That Will Make You Love Classical Music.” We think an SPCO concert in your future will make you love classical music, too! Here are some of our upcoming concerts that feature composers from The New York Times list:

  • Jessie Montgomery’s music will be featured prominently in two Free Family Concerts on October 13. You will also be able to live stream this performance for free from the SPCO’s Concert Library.
  • Caroline Shaw

You can hear Steve Reich’s Duet with Artistic Partner Pekka Kuusisto and SPCO violinist Maureen Nelson in three Thanksgiving weekend performances featuring American works of the last 50 years.

  • Pulitzer Prize winner Caroline Shaw’s new piano concerto (an SPCO co-commission) will receive its Midwest premiere on March 15-17. Pianist Jonathan Biss will be joining us for the fourth installment of our Beethoven/5 project. This time, Caroline Shaw’s concerto will be paired with Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto.

Julia Bullock

And we just had a stellar opening weekend to our 60th season with soprano Julia Bullock, performing Samuel Barber’s riveting Knoxville: Summer of 1915. Check out reviews from the Star Tribune and Pioneer Press. We look forward to seeing you at an SPCO concert soon!
