Bernhard Scully principal horn
Saint Paul native Bernhard Scully is the principal horn of The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. He has already been featured as a soloist with the SPCO in Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings, and in Richard Strauss’ Concerto No. 2 for Horn and Orchestra. Previous to the SPCO, Bernhard was the horn player of the world-renowned Canadian Brass Quintet. During his time with this ensemble he performed in sixteen countries, on three separate continents, and recorded four CDs. He has given master classes all over the world to thousands of students, and has been on faculty at the Music Academy of the West, and at the Eastman Music School Summer Brass Quintet Seminar. He has recently done a solo recording project for the Hal Leonard Publishing Company that includes much of the standard repertoire for horn and piano. In 2004, Bernhard was the only American invited to participate in the Geneva International Horn Competition. Bernhard also has the honor of being the first classical brass player to be awarded the prestigious McKnight Artist Fellowship for Performing Musicians. Bernhard is married to Sarah Scully, a music therapist and flute player. They are the proud parents of their daughter Eleanor Joy Scully. They enjoy exercising, cooking, being involved in their church, and playing with their Maine Coon cat Sibelius.
